This detail is from a pastel "Candy" sign that's going to hang in the new Trader Joe's in San Francisco.
All the signs are being drawn by my friend Chance, who is a genius, artist, and graphic designer who I met at the Roxie in SF many years ago. Now, she is my neighbor and inspiration in Santa Cruz.
She asked Aretha if she would pose to do a pastel portrait for the CANDY section. As you know, the candy and chocolate section at Trader Joe's is a very dangerous and exciting place. Chance wanted the sign to be reminiscent of the Haight Ashbury in its heyday. Voila— My mommy's heart is bursting with pride!
