The Toasted Marshmallow Electric Milkshake Goodness Test

Soda220050801074223 Last night I had a toasted marshmallow milkshake.

It was so heaven-gobsmacked-delicious I hardly know how to reconstruct the recipe. Is there anyplace else besides New York that has this on the menu?

It was served at a upwardly mobile burger joint called Stand, which my friend Laura Miller introduced me to.

She said there was no point in even considering another flavor, although there were many. Not only is the ice-cream itself potent with the nostalgic taste of a six-year-old's first bite of a burnt 'mallow— but the shake itself is topped with real whipped cream and a CROWN of actual torched marshmallows melting hot on the ice cold glass. Sweet Jesus!

I'm a little stuck on reconstructing the recipe since I'm not sure what flavor of gelato to start with. (I didn't see marshmallow on their flavors list.) I could totally do the torched marshmallows on top of a glass, though.

Here in Texas, Paciugo makes a smores flavored gelato that would be an excellent shake base. I'll try that later this summer.

I'm pretty sure that the flavoring is just vanilla, Melissa. I was convinced they'd flavored it somehow (it's the famed il Laboratorio Gelato ice cream), but now I think it's all in how you drink it. After you melt the marshmallow on top, drink using a wide straw (the kind they use for bubble tea) to drink it. Then keep punching the straw down through the topping and you get a little melted marshmallow with every sip. Enjoy!

From liberal cave-in politics to gay sexuality in Alfred Hitchcock movies to toasted-marshmallow milkshakes! Never let it be said that Susie Bright isn't a versatile writer!

Damn, but the only places to get milkshakes here anymore are the gosh-darned fascist-food places. (There are also places like Friendly's and Denny's, but that stuff's not actually food!) I used to like McMilkshakes, but over the last 15 years they've gone straight to hell, too much sugar, too little flavor, why even the venerable Arby's Jamocha shake has fallen on hard times! There used to be a Ben & Jerry's in a nearby (y)upscale college town, but they left 10 years ago for reasons which I've yet to fathom.

I guess if ya want something done right, you have to go and grab a garage-sale blender and do things up yourself!

Susie is in NYC!!! Here for BEA? I'm going on Friday and will keep my eyes peeled for you.

Funny, this burger joint is pretty much in my 'hood, and I have yet to notice it, but will check it out with one of my more carnivorous friends. Love that gelato!

That sounds delicious. Can you get the recipe or is it as straight-forward as it sounds?

I have an amazing recipe for the best Steak I've ever had. It starts with 50 lbs of Veal bones!

one love,
Chris

That milkshake sounds heavenly! If I ever get to NYC, I'll definitely track this place down and give it a try.

chris defendorf: I know what the 50 pounds of veal bones is for! Demiglace!

First you roast them, then you make stock with them. Then you strain the bones and vegies out, chill, and skim the fat off. Then you reduce the stock until it is as thick as maple syrup.

When demiglace is done right, without any starchy thickeners, it is heavenly stuff. It makes me weak in the knees! Also, it is THE BEST STUFF IN THE WORLD for licking off your lover's body! Seriously, it goes with the taste of skin and the musky scents like nothing sweet ever could. Just thinking about it makes me giddy!

You're trying to kill my poor diabetic ass, aren't you?
*keels over*

NOW you tell us! I was just in NYC a fortnight ago and would have definately tracked this down! (ok, no, I'm not British - just wanted to use "fortnight"!) As for (yet) another sensual culinary diversion in the City, try Vosges Haut Chocolate at 132 Spring St in SoHo. Exotic truffles (such as the current seasaonl floral versions), chocolate bars with unusual but alluring spices, and the same in liquid form.

Susie: looked for you at the BEA today, but did not see you...thanks for the tip on the shake...it sounds insanely good.

The milkshake sounds wickedly good. I'm craving it so suddenly I may have to hop on the next bus to NYC.

My personal favorite happens to be on the far end of the spectrum -- Oreo milkshakes made with chocolate ice cream.
