Susie Interviews Jessica Cutler, The Washingtonienne

053107 This week on my audio show I  talk with author and blogger Jessica Cutler.

Jessica was a bored, envelope-tossing, congressional staffer when the online sex diary she shared among her friends got some unexpected notoriety— and snared a few pious policy-makers in its revelations.

Jessica's short-lived blog, The Washingtonienne, turned into a "Who's Who" D.C. sex scandal, and got her canned— with fireworks.

Did she crawl away and hide under the bed, enroll in a 10-day rehab, issue a nondenial denial?

No— as Jessica quotes from her own father, she understood "you gotta paddle your own canoe."

Jessica and I talk about the hypocrisy of Capitol Hill's Christian conservatives, the difference between prostitution and getting paid for sex, and the best drugs for getting it on.

Then, in the "Try This at Home" mailbag, Susie responds to one woman's dream blowjob, in which small is beautiful.

Bill Wadman's photo of Jessica was taken a  couple hours after our interview, on Coney Island, for his "365" Project of taking one portrait every day.

Don't forget, you can send your confidential questions, feedback about the show, and requests for girly cards to susie@audible.com. (Episode 302, July 27, 2007)

The difference between prostitution getting paid for sex? Oh my goodness - I've never thought of it that way. There are a lot of housewives who clearly fall into the prostitute category if you consider the ramifications!

Miss J is an enigma to me. She just wrote on her blog, recalling our interview. She says:

"I hate the sound of my voice too. And I know I giggle and stammer ("like, you know") too much. No need to send me an email telling me this.

"I'm not writing another book. I gave up when my computer crashed. "I'm working on another one" is just something I tell people to sound Busy and Important.

"I talk a lot about drunk/high sex not being "real," but I cannot remember the last time I had sober sex. (Nor would I want to!)

"Susie expected me to be taller."

I wish she'd felt like she could tell me anything and I wouldn't whip out a Bible or scold her... I'm grateful when people are honest with me, even if it's not a respectable story. I guess that's every interviewer's lament... wishing you could get someone to trust you in the space of an hour. I've interviewed people who frightened me, whose work repulsed me, whose positions I opposed... but I'm always hoping, in the interview context, that they'll go for it, and that I can be a good listener.

In any case, I'm glad she posted her after-thoughts.

I never really think about any of this stuff until someone interviews me, so I'm often trying to figure it out as I'm speaking. (Which is unfortunate if it's being recorded.) If I'm unsure about how to answer a question, I give it my best shot.
