Susie Interviews Katha Pollitt

Gse_multipart58739 This week on my audio show, In Bed, I start off with an examination of one U.S. senator's diaper fetish— our kinky vanguard hypocrite of the week!

Then, in my latest New York studio interview, I talk with one of my heroes, feminist author Katha Pollitt, best known for her Nation magazine column "Subject to Debate."

Her new book, Learning to Drive: & Other Life Stories, includes her recollections of when she was very young and had entry-level job proofreading pornographic galleys.

Pollitt's writing is.. sublime. You rarely read feminism like this today. We talk about how sexual liberation got separated from women's liberation, braless hussies, the notion of the fragile male ego, and global feminism.

Katha Pollitt: How Sexual Liberation Got Separated from Women's Liberation

Then, in the "Try This at Home" mailbag, Susie responds to a listener who asks if prostitution can be done "tastefully." Would that be with the fork on the left?

Top-shelf interview with a top-shelf journalist, Susie. You should be on NPR or MSNBC.

RE: Katha's brief mentioning of "fatties" in the porn she proofread:

I remember walking into a showing of "Behind the Green Door" in one of the bigger lecture halls in college one weekend in the late 70's (the movie was put on by some fraternity - no shock there). There was a scene involving a fat woman. She was obviously in the production for comic value. When one of the guys in the film went down on her, there were catcalls of disgust, and derisive laughter galore. As someone who has loved particularly non-supermodel women, I think that kind of thing is inexcusably crass. For me, appearance takes a back seat to personality. I mean, Ann Coulter is a conventionally attractive, slender woman. Would you want to get it on with her, hmm?

RE: Kath's discussion of female genital mutilation. Anyone who does that sort of thing to a woman should have his hands cut off. With a chainsaw.

RE: "Tasteful prostitution": Do you mean that the fork should be placed to the left of the bed, next to the Magic Wand vibrator? ;~)

Susie:

I picked up your comments on Alternet.org pertaining to Larry Craig's wifes feelings about the situation and I would just like to congratulate on an excellent piece of Journalism...extremely well done and filled with provocative conjecture.
Too bad most of the commentators did not pick up on its quality. Usually I am decrying the poor journalistic quality, misinformation and lies, that alternet editors continue to allow some of their writers to publish so I am happy to be able to make a positive commment.

Thank You.
